Collegiates 2006

Happy New Year skydivers! Many fun times were had over break when we traveled from Virginia to Florida to compete in the USPA National Collegiate Parachuting Championship 2006! (2006- booooo, 2007- yaaaay!) This year’s collegaites marks the last time for a few years that the event will be held in Florida, and we made sure to leave our mark. We were fortunate to be very well funded by the school so we all made a lot of jumps! Competing teams included:Air Miami (Mike & Gaddy)

  • 4-way team “The Late James Brown”: Jamie, Doug xtreme, Freshmen, and Reid (from Georgia Tech) with Chris Spence flying camera
  • 2-way team “Wild Turkeys”: Sweetpea and Sam Pitts (from Shippensburg Univ.)
  • Freefly team “Air Miami” SILVER MEDALISTS: Gaddy and Mike
  • Sport Accuracy: Jamie won BRONZE in master’s class, Freshmen won SILVER in intermediate class.

Jamie dead centersAfter the competition and banquet where we caused a truly skydiverly ruckus and drank overpriced beer, we all headed over to Skydive City in Zephyrhills for the New Years boogie. There we enjoyed three otters, a casa and even a helicopter to keep us in the air all day. A few of the many memorable accomplishments were:

  • Kevin got his A-license!
  • Gaddy broke 500 jumps and is now eligible for his D-license and tandem rating!
  • Doug xtreme broke 200 jumps
  • Sweetpea broke 100 jumpsPaul, Sweepea, Nate, Emily
  • Many VT skydivers made their FIRST helicopter jump!
  • The club made a 2 point 12 way, completed by 8k!
  • Ian won the New Years Eve drunkoff
  • Almost everyone ended up in the swoop pond, whether they wanted to or not
  • We returned to the infamous seafood restaurant where Chewbacca was born, and somehow managed to avoid being kicked out for another year

Everyone had a great time, hopefully we will be able to do it all again next year in Eloy, Arizona!
