Brings home the Gold!
The Skydiving Club
of Virginia Tech's competition team, VTSD, recently returned
from the United States Parachute Association's National
Skydiving Championships with gold medals hung around thier
necks. Congradulations guys! The team traveled to Skydive
Spaceland, just outside of Houston, Texas, and battled against
32 other teams for the title of Intermediate 4way National
Champions. The team started a very rigorous training program
last winter, and the hard work has finally paid off. The
team, consisting of Andrew, Doug, Joey, Ben, and Jamie,
would like to thank thier sponsors Skydive Carolina, Alti-2,
and Cookie Composites for thier help in acheiving this amazing
feat! Be sure to check out the competition video here
and congradulate the guys!

Welcome
back!!
Hey everybody, welcome back to school for
the Fall 2009 semester!! We hope you all had a great summer
filled with lots of fun (and safe!) skydiving! This semester
is already looking very promising- several new faces as
well as huge progress from some of our student jumpers!
Sarah Thuman completed several AFF jumps and is rocketing
towards her license, and Brittany Wilson and Paul "PP"
Phillips continue to blast through AFF. Congratulations
everybody, keep it up! In addition, new member Allison Studley
completed AFF and is ready for more!
Our competitive 4way team, VTSD, has been
very active in regional meets up and down the east coast.
They have been competing in the Carolina Skydiving League,
Virginia Parachute Council, and the Mid-Atlantic Skydiving
League in preparation for USPA Nationals this coming October.
The team has been frequenting the ParacleteXP wind-tunnel
in Raeford, NC and will continue to train at thier new DZ,
Skydive Carolina in
Chester, SC. Skydive Carolina is an amazing dropzone with
excellent facilities, top-notch staff, a killer on-site
grill, and a beautiful Twin Otter. The team is very excited
to represent Virginia Tech and Skydive Carolina at USPA
Nationals as well as USPA Collegiate Nationals this Fall!
Follow the 4way team on facebook right here: VTSD!!
Congrats guys, keep rockin'!!
New
Members are Flying Towards Licenses!
Up and coming
members in the club have been making great progress towards
thier skydiving licenses! Paul "PP" Phillips,
a freshman engineer, recently completed AFF and is now working
with the coaches in the club to reach his A-License. Brittany
Wilson, a senior music major, and Shapeshifter, a junior
finance major, have both made huge strides in their AFF
progression. They too will soon graduate from AFF and move
on to working with our club coaches to become licensed skydivers!
Congratulations Brittany, PP, and Chris, keep up the good
work!

The meet was held at Skydive Carolina in Chester, SC. Andrew,
Doug, Joey, and Ben scored 60 pts over 6 rounds of competition,
posting an remarkable 10pt average! This was quite an impressive
acheivement for the team as it was thier first exposure
to several new formations found in this higher division
(AA) of competition! Shapeshifter also completed 3 levels
of his AFF progression this weekend in Carolina. Great work
Shapeshifter, you're almost there! VTSD would like to thank
Frank Harris, the team's videographer,
for his excellent work during the competition! The club
also thanks Skydive Carolina for thier amazing facilities
and smooth operation of the competition! Below is

Casa
Boogie in Suffolk, Virginia
The weekend
of April 17-19th proved to be a great weekend for the club.
Members ventured out to Skydive Suffolk to attend thier
annual Casa Boogie! (A Casa is a large cargo aircraft that
holds 35 jumpers and has a tailgate that drops open out
the back of the plane instead of a side door!) While at
the boogie, the club enjoyed beautiful weather and discounted
jump prices for the weekend. Some notable accomplishments
from the boogie included Paul "PP" Phillips graduating
from AFF, Bobby getting re-current and making 5 jumps after
a brief break from the action, and Andrew making his first
2 wingsuit jumps as well as his first intentional cut-away!
This was a great weekend for club members of all experience
levels! Thank you Skydive Suffolk!

2008 Highlights
We recently returned from Houston, Texas at
Skydive Spaceland for this year's USPA National Collegiate
Parachuting Championship! The competition went very smoothly
and everyone had loads of fun. We're all looking forward
to returning again next year!!
- Our 6way speed team "Thundercats" (Jamie,
Doug, Mike, Kevin, Andrew, and Ben) won the silver medal,
also setting an all-time Collegaites record for the
fastest build.
- Ben won gold in the masters class sport accuracy
event.
- Morgan won gold and Mike won bronze in the intermediate
class sport accuracy.
- Andrew made his 200th jump in a 5way tackle-fest.
- Joey made his 100th jump on a 10way sunset hoop-dive.
- Other team accomplishments included 4way team "VT
B-Team" (Jamie, Ben, Morgan, Gil) placing 4th and
4way team "Texas Shower" (Doug, Mike, Kevin,
Andrew) placing 6th of 11 teams. Our 2way team "Pen
15" (Joey and Cam Haley from UConn) placed 5th

Each competition was extremely close, and in many cases
the top few teams were decided by only a single point.

tons of amazing pictures from photographer Ori Kuper
of Skydive Spaceland. Thanks again to Ori!!!
